I’m coming to you with another local Fayetteville outing this week. It’s a great spot if you want to get outside for a bit without committing to a full day drive. It’s great for families and trail runs and there’s a lot of tours offered if you want to get more in depth to learn about the area. Fayetteville.
What skill level is required?
Beginner.
Is it kid-friendly?
Yes. Of course, you know your kids best so use your best judgment as far as what is suitable for them.
Is it dog-friendly?
Yes, on a leash.
What hours is it open?
Winter hours: 7am – 5pm
Summer hours: 7am – 8pm
Who is it good for?
Families (great for kids), short trail runs, place to relax/read/work outside.
What is the cost for the Lake Rim pool?
The cost for the pool is $1 – $2 depending on age for residents, and $2 – $4 for non-residents.
Visiting the park to walk around the trail is free.
What should you bring with you?
- Water (I use this insulated bottle)
- Sun protection
- Comfortable shoes (sneakers are fine and these are my fav beginner hiking shoes if you’re looking for new ones)
- Snacks or lunch
- This is my favorite action camera for outdoor adventures (and it’s waterproof!)
- Lightweight towel if you plan on swimming
Where to park for the Lake Rim pool and park
You can use ‘Lake Rim Park‘ in Google Maps and it will take you to the location on Tar Kiln Drive.
If you only use ‘Lake Rim’ it will take you a little further down the road to where the lake is and not the park itself.
Either way, you’ll see the big sign as you get there so it’s hard to miss.
As you drive in, there is one parking lot on your right and another a little further down at the end of the road.
The one at the end of the road is convenient because it is closer to the start of the trail and playground, but either will work as the park is not that big.

Hiking at Lake Rim Park
This is a great place for families to go for a hike because the trail is short – one mile – and easy. Perfect for the kids to get outdoors on a nature walk without needing a lot of planning.
It’s also great if you want a close spot for an easy trail run.
The wetland area is pretty cool with a lot of nature growth and bridges to walk on.
To start the hike, follow the signs for the wetland trail.
It’s not my favorite place for an outdoor walk in the Fayetteville area because there’s a lot of traffic noise so it took away the serenity that being in nature usually brings.
For a more peaceful outing, I’d recommend:
I think of the Lake Rim Hike as a nice easy one but nothing overly special.
Lake Rim Park pool and tours
Luckily the hike isn’t the only thing to do at Lake Rim Park.
There’s also:
- playgrounds
- splash pad
- sporting fields
- tennis courts
- volleyball courts
- pool
There are a couple of covered seating areas as well, which I think would be great if you were wanting somewhere to chill outdoors to study or get the family together for a picnic.

The Lake Rim pool and aquatics area
The nearby lake
Further down Raeford Road, you can visit Lake Rim. Just follow the street to the end and you will turn left into the parking area.
It’s a small lakeside area, but quite scenic and a good place to add on after you visit the park. There is a grassy area on the edge of the water to chill out and watch the ducks.
Or, if you want a little more activity, you can try some fishing (a fishing license is required) or canoe or kayak on the water.

Overall thoughts on Lake Rim Park
Overall, Lake Rim Park is a fun outdoor place to visit especially for families, gatherings, or just an outdoor study/reading area.
While it was a little underwhelming for me personally in terms of the hike, I saw a lot of kids having a blast exploring the trail and there’s a lot on offer in terms of the facilities and range of tours and programs.
